Number of ophthalmologists

At the inauguration of the Society, there were only fourteen ophthalmologists in Ghana. Four of the fourteen ophthalmologists were expatriates working, one each, in Agogo (Ashanti Region), Bawku, (Upper East Region), Nandom (Upper West Region) and the fourth was based at the National Eye Care Unit, Ministry of Health, as the Sightsavers Country Representative, but he also helped in service provision at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and at some district hospitals, on outreach basis. With the woefully inadequate numbers of eye care providers (ophthalmologists, optometrists and ophthalmic nurses) in the country, there was an urgent need to put in place a strategy to develop the human resource for eye health service delivery. Training programmes had to be established for all these cadres in-country.
Currently, there are fifty practicing ophthalmologists in the country; only one is a non-Ghanaian, from Cameroun
